PREMIER REPLIES TO FARMERS Electric Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, Last Night. The intention of the Government to make every payment possible under the Social Security Act as from April t was mentioned by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M, J. Savage, when his attention was drawn to a remit passed by the Hastings branch of the Hew Zealand Farmers’ Union. The branch asked if the Government proposed to suspend the taxation necessary to meet the benefits under the Act that would not be available at the beginning of April. “The answer is no,” said Air. Savage. “We don’t agree that any of the benefits are going to be suspended. We are going to have them inaugurated as rapidly as we can. Every payment that can be will be made at an appropriate time. “I am sure the great majority cf the farmers realise the value of the social, security scheme and no section of the community can say they will never need it. “The whole of the superannuation and pension payments will bo paid as from April 1 and as many other payments as possible. A few that cannot be made will follow in quick succession. “The Minister of Health Las already had a discussion with representatives of the medical profession and the whole question of making arrangements with doctors and others concerned in the health side c§f the scheme is going forward as rapidly as possible. The Government has to see rhat decent arrangements are made with these people. The Labour Government cannot afford to be accused of laying down conditions not fair and equitable to those giving the. service.” The question of the payment of taxation under the Social Security Act was before the Hastings, branch of the Farmers’ Union when the following resolution, to be presented as a remit at the forthcoming executive meeting at Waipukurau. was passed: “Owing to the benefits under Social Securitv being suspended in accordance with the pronouncement recently made by the Minister, is it the intention of the Government to suspend the taxation necessary to meet the benefits ?” Air. R. Talbot stated that although the benefits of social service had been postponed indefinitely there had been no promise of p postponement of taxation.
