DEAD FOOTBALLER.
INQUEST FOLLOWS FATALITY. SURPRISED WITNESS GIVES EVIDENCE. Electric Telegraph—Press Association PALMERSTON N.. Last Night. An inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of the Maori All Black Bernard Edward Rogers, which occurred in Palmerston North on Thursday following a fall the previous night, was opened before Mr A. J. Graham, coroner, yesterday. William Teihoka Parata a farmer of Waitati, Otago, and a selector of the Maori representatives, gave evidence oi identification. He last saw Rogers alive on Wednesday evening about 8 p.m. Ho was in his usual state of health but in a semi-drunken condition. This was up-stairs in the Cafe de Paris Hotel. ‘‘l was surprised tc- see him in that condition,” added witness, “because 1 did not. know he drank. I left the hotel and about an hour later I was notified of an accident at the hotel involving one of the players. 1 immediately returned tc- the hotel, but by this time the injured man had been taken to the hospital. I was informed of. what had taken place. I witnessed the football match during the afternoon and deceased received no injury during the match as fan as I know.’ ’ The inquest was adjourned sine die.
