Compton (Mangatailioka), second Mr * Vi °r A|€jl (Nireaha) and third Mr 1. Henderson (Dannevirke). The Pahiatua fire brigade had a rail at 10.45 p.m. on Saturday to attend an outbreak at .the residence ot Miss Hodgkinson, Tyndall Street. It is understood that a candle was responsible for a mattress catching on fire, the flames scorching the walls. The fire was put out by a male member of the household, savln,S. the services of the brigade, which was smartly on the job. Owing to the very uncertain weather in Pahiatua on Saturday, only two competitors took part 'in the Amateur Cycle Club’s road race. The course was Pahiutua to lAXangamaire and return. It. Groube won by a length from 1.. Pearce. While racing, Jj. I earce had the misfortune to injure his hand. He bent down to adjust a. nut and his hand caught in the spokes, making a very painful injury.
The Pahiatua. Horse Sports dance which takes place in the Foresters" Hall on Wednesday, July 22 gives promise of being a notable function, and is already the subject of much planning and arranging by dancers from outside Pahiatua. The music will be supplied by Ted Cooke’s noted dance band from Palmerston N., who have already established a good reputation in the district. Special efforts aixi being made to give dancers n. supper out of the oidinr.rv. and tlie committee have set, aside generous prizes for the novelty dances.
The late 'Mr K’. L. Peters, whose death was recorded on Friday, was a well-known coach proprietor in the old days, being one of the founders of the “Peters’ lino of coaches,” running at different periods between Palmerston North, Woodville, and Waiouru-Tokaanu and several other routes, hater he joined the service of the Wellington Tramway Department and was driving both tlie horse trains and later the electric cars,
■i’ 1 1 ere he was popularly known among drivers as “Dad,” being the oldest driver on the cars. Failing health (impelled him to move to Misterton ibout eight years ago to live with li dausgiiter, Mrs R. Jenkins.
