The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING MONDAY, JULY 20, 1936. THANKFUL SUBJECTS.

A scene enacted in a few brief moments during a public parade set the whole world buzzing, and when the news of the Hyde Park affair was made known, it was not surprising that messages should come from every quarter of the globe conveying sympathy with his Majesty. There seems little room to doubt hut what the incident- was designed to bring the offender into tne public eye. Such occurrences as this are happily rare in England, and while there seems little reason to think that- McMahon intended to harm his Majesty, it is nevertheless, disturbing to think that cur Sovereign has been thrust into the public eye in such manner. The King’s bearing throughout the whole affair was admirable, and his millions of devoted subjects must admire the nonchalance he displayed by playing a round of golf afterwards. We hate to think anyone would wish him harm, but in the light of such an occurrence as this the authorities will have to adopt stricter precautions for his safety. Our King is not a stickler for cour vent-ion as was practised by iris royal forebears, and in the news column to-day we read of his action in walking unattended to the offices of the Duchy of Cornwall. Such actions as these have always been characteristic of cur King, and it is probably a great joy for him to move •about occasionally without the shallow of an attendant retinue. McMahon‘s action will, in all probability, put an end to such freedom for the King, while McMahon must consider himself a very lucky man to be alive to-day. .Had a shot been discharged Irorn the weapon the crowd would have torn him limb from limb. As it was it was entirely due to the prompt action of the police that he escaped as lightly as he did.
