HAMUA DEFEAT OLD BOYS COWAN CUP RESULTS. The Hush Districts Union competitions were advanced a further stage on Saturday when Haniua and Old Boys met on the Showgrounds, and after a keen tussle Hamua proved the winners 11—3. This brings Hamua’s points on a level with Mangatainoka—l3. Next Saturday these two teams will batt’e for the honour of being this year’s champions. Ballance defaulted to Konini. The first round of the junior Cowan Cup was commenced and resulted in United defeating. Hukanui B—6, and Ngaturi were successful over Marima, 10—3. RESULTS~AT A GLANCE. SENIOR. HAMUA v. OLD BOYS. At the Pahiatua Showgrounds the game was nearly an hour late in starting, due to the Ngaturi-Marima junior game starting late. Old Boys only had thirteen men to meet the fuli team of Hamua. The day was very unsettled and during the first half fairly lieavj 7 rain fell, making the ground very soft. The following were the teams: Hamua (black and white) : D. Wolland, Bentley, P. Wolland, W. Twentyman, H. Wolland, S. Wolland, P. Monaghan, H. .Cooper, T. Cavanagh, M. Spring (captain), Bradbury, L. Bailey, A. Hirst, B. Minnett, W. (Mitchell. Eketahuna Old Boys (white) : Aitken, Waters, Failover, Missen. Olivant, Pye, Reeve, Hansen, McKay, Graham, Duffy, Sigvertsen, J. Ross. Old Boys kicked off and immediately set up an attack. Twentyman got possession ot the ball and kicked for the line. From the line-out Old Boys got the ball and with a series of passes got well down in Hamua territory. The play became dangerous but Bentley kicked the ball well upheld and saved the situation. From the line-out the ball was thrown crooked and a scrum was ordered. Old Boys got the ball and out it went. Twentyman got the ball and made a dive for it but was brought dow n near the Twenty-five line. Old Boys received a penalty kick and shot was made lor a goal but failed. The play was in midand again Twentyman made a good run. A pass to P. Wolland made the game look like a sure try but Wolland was thrown near the corner flag. From the line-out the ball was passed through a number of hands and Haniua were very unlucky not to score on the other side of the field, but Old Boys’ backs were marking well and the ball was jnmted well up-field. From the line-out Old Boys brought the play into Hamua’s twenty-five. A scrum was ordered and the ball was secured by the whites and in Old Boys’ twentyfive a penalty kick was awarded to Hamua. P. Wolland took the kick but the ball was very slippery and the shot failed. A good kick by Old Boys brought the play downfield and in the next few minutes several of Hamua’s men handled the ball. Twentyman made a dash and while being tackled passed a beautiful pass to H. Wolland, who went over for a well-earned try. P. Wolland took tile kick but failed to convert: Hamua 3—nil. This brought the game to half-time. P. Monaghan came off the field limping.

In the second half Monaghan was unable to return and was replaced by P. Sullivan. Old Hoys pushed hard but Hamua had solid defence and the play was -brought to midfield. Hamua iorced their wavthrough, but Old Boys' full-back was very safe and saved the situation several tunes. From most of the serums Old Boys got the ball. Some hard play followed Imt Hamua brought the play near the Old Boys’ line and 11. Bradbury went over for a. beautiful score. H. Cooper placed the leather right between the posts and the score read B—nil. Old Boys tried hard to break through Hamua’s defence and atter getting to Hamua’s twenty-five yard lino were awarded a free-kick. The ball flew with the direction correct but it fell short of the goal posts. A good piece of play followed but was marred by the greasy nature of the ground. Twentyman was given a penalty kick but failed to find the goal. Again Twentyman fought his way across and after a beatuiful run gained his objective. He took the kick but failed: Hamua 11, Old Bovs nil. The light was not good; grey clouds were about and play became very ragged. Old Boys’ once white jerseys wore now dark brown. A freekick for Old Boys from half-way took play into Hamua territory but was soon brought to mid-field. From the line-out Old Boys made a desperate effort to make a score but Bentley was their stumbling block. The game played on when just before time was up I’Ve, of. Old Bovs, managed to get over with a wed-earned try. Old Boys failed to convert ami the whistle went, the score being: Hamua 11. Old Boys 3. Mr J. Fulton was the referee. FROM OTHER CENTRES.
