MEN'S GOLF.

SWAINSON CLUB CHAMPION.

four years in succession. In the semi-final of the club championship J. O’Sullivan defeated !>• How den, 2 and 1. Howden did not play as well as usual, many of Ins putts just failing to find the cup. The final of the championship, contested over thirty-six holes, was a one-horse race, J. G. Swain sou being much too good lor J. O’Sullivan, whom he defeated 10 and 8. Once again Swain son proved that he is in a class by himself so 1 alas the local club is concerned. In returning a 35 over the first nine holes, Swainson never gave O’Sullivan a look-in. At lunch he stood 9 up, having returned a, < 6 to O’Sullivan’s 87. Playing steadily in the afternoon Swainson held his nine up lead until the tenth where he clinched the game and championship with a “birdie ’ three. Swainson is to be congratulated, on his ability to “produce the goods” when the occasion demands. This is the fourth year in succession that he has won ihe championship and it looks very probable that he will be champion for a few more years yet.

In the final of the four-ball S. K. Siddells and R. H. Taylor won from C. Wright and M. Macdonald, 3 and 2. This match was verv closely contested, the deciding factor being Taylor’s steadiness at the short holes coupled with Siddells’ brilliance at the long ones. Macdonald did not play up to his usual standard whereas Wright put up a solid performance in returning an 8/ . Siddells’ and Taylor’s best ball was 76 which proves that they must have “dove-tailed” well throughout the match. Siddells’ medal .round was 85 and Taylor’s 86. L. T. Russell won the medal competition last week-end with a net 66. J. Richardson was runner-up with a 67.

Large entries are coming to hand for the tournament and indications point to a record number of starters. Local players who intend to compete are asked to hand in their names to the lion, secretary, Mr W. H. Watson, immediately. On Friday night a draw will be made and, together with the starting times for the qualifying round, will be published in the “Herald” on Saturday.

Those connected with the management of the tournament are working very hard and it is hoped all local players will participate and thus make this the most successful tournament vet held.
