A plumber in America has turned boxer. Let’s hope he doesn't take so long to come round. A full practice of all members and intending members of the Pahiatu x Cricket Club will be held on the Recreation ground on Eriday evening. The Royal Show at Toinoana showgrounds, Hastings, opened yesterday morning in dull weather with a slight drizzle, the weather prospects not being jxirtdcularly good. The opening ceremony was performed by the Governor General Lord Galway during the afternoon. Despite the overcast sky and rain, there is a very large crowd expected and if it is reasonably fine to-day all local records for attendances will be broken. The entries are about. 1,000 greater than for a.ny previous show locally, and about 700 more than at last year’s Royal show at Invercargill.

Among the attractions near at hand on Labour Da\ is the spring meeting of the Manawatu Trotting Chib which will be hold on the Awapuni racecourse, Palmerston North. r lhe first race is timed to start at 12.15 p.m. and the last race at 4.25 p.m. The 9 a.m train from Dannevirke connects at Palmerston North with the 11.20 a.m. Palmerston* racecourse train and the return train for Dannevirke and intermediate stations will leave Palmerston North at 5.10 p.m. Horses from Christchurch, Wellington, Hawera, Wanganui Hastings, Waikato and Manawatu are down to compete at the meeting and followers of the light harness sport are assured of a good day’s outing. Day excursion tickets to Awapnni racecourse will be issued from Dannevirke and intermediate stations.
