A liundred-mile-au-bour hurricane raged throughout Scotland swelling rivers, felling telephone poles and doing widespread damage. Eight vessels are racing to tho rescue of 45 members of the crew of the steamer Vardulia who were com* pelled to abandon ship and take to the. Ix>ats 600 miles north-west of tho Hebrides. The Vardulia was bound for Newfoundland The residents of the Cumberland village Bottle lescued by breeches buoy 25 members of the crew of the Finnish steamer Esbo which was driven aground in the storm which defeated the efforts ol lifeboats to reach her. Motor craft were wrecked at Bowling harbour on the River Clyde. A storm blinded Cyclist and r. pedestrian in Glasgow were killed in collisions.

'The Northern air service was cancelled and liners are unable to call at Belfast.

Minor damage was done in England. Hie wind derailed the Munches-ter-Oarlisle goods train. Further gales are forc-cast. A later message states that many, vessels are in difficulties in the North Sea and several are aground on the Dutch coast.
