This Day Defectives* have been investigating for three months a rep or j that an attempt would he made to rob the Common wealt h Bu.uk at Ba llarat of about £TuO,OOO. The- police state that two constables cn beat duty at Baliaiot- were each offered £■ 10,000 for their complicity. These policemen informed their superiors car the plot and acting upon information received a number of detectives were put oil constant guard on the bank.
On the night of April 27th the police alleged that a car containing an exyacetlyene plant- was driven to Ballarat and stopped within a hundred yards of the Bank. Two men i Lie- wind the building hut they were* dUturbed and returned to Melbourne. The oxacetv-le-ne- plant and kit of burglars’ tools were found on the Ball.: rat Road by the police next morning.
Yesterday the police questioned two men and they were charged with having conspired to break and enter the Bank.
