NOT A WISE PRACTICE.
■-a.vs the Dairy Control Board’s annual report: J lie Board lias definitelv decided to assume control of the marketing ot all secondary butters which aie being exported. This includes S^\ me,y butter grading below first rri a " d .. a \ vhey and milled buttei. Ibe Board gave tins proposal the most careful consideration beiore taking action. Tlie Board had ce u and conclusive evidence that the good name of the Dominion’s nnest and first grade creamery butter was being detrimentallv ’affected by the sale of these lower grade butters over the* retail counter Bet? re taking action the Board asked the New Zealand Dairy Produce Importers Association in London lor their help and advice. Mr H. E. Davis, the Board’s London manager, reporting on his meeting with the Executive ■Committee of that Association, said:
“YVe summarise the results of the discussion as follows: + i sale of those butters in tlie United Kingdom is not in the best interests of the New Zealand dairy industry.
‘(2) The greater proportion of New Zealand whey butter sold in tlie United Kingdom finds its market through wholesale trade channels and is sold retail in most cases as New Zealand butter. The proportion s° sold is estimated at 90 per cent, i . Importers are anxious to help, hut are of the opinion that , y solution is to prevent the butter from reaching the United Kingdom.” The Board realised that to take such action would simply ruin the local market. It was finally decided that as from Ist May, 1933, and for twelve months that- nil creamery butter below first grade and ail whey and milled butter should be sent to the United Kingdom to one merchant to sell on an undertaking being given that none of it would find its way to the retailer’s counter as New Zealand butter.
