THE MASTERTON SEAT.
MR HOGG S POSITION
Newspapers circulating in the Masterton electorate comment unfavourably on Mr A. W. Hogg’s speech on Monday night. The Masterton Times says:—“ln a choice between Mr Hogg and a candidate pledged to support the Ward Party we should, of course, choose the former. But in making a selection between Mr Hogg and a candidate who endorses Mr Massey’s policy, and who in other respects is cleanhanded, honest of purpose, sound hi knowledge, and thoroughly capable of representing this electorate in Par-' liament, we must give support to the latter. The fight in Masterton electorate is, after all, between the Ward Party and the Opposition—between unsound and extravagant administration and reform —and we think the result is a foregone conclusion.” The Eketahuna Express writes: "In the absence of a more definite statement u • can only conclude that Mr Hogg will continue to slate the Government, hut will he found on its side u -11 cases of division, for the time i. ii:g at least. Hot of what use is his criticism when his vote is sure. The Government is evidently quite satisfied with the position or it would have a nominee in the field.”
