CHARGE AGAINST JOCKEY.
ALLEGED THEFT OF JEWELLERY.
EXTRADITION ORDER GRANTED, AUCKLAND, October 9.
An order for his extradition having been made by Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning, Francis M'Govern, aged 25, a well-known New Zealand jockey, who was arrested in Auckland on October 2, charged with stealing jewellery valued at £2400 from the house of John Sydney Bovill, at Point Piper, Sydney, early in September, is to return to New South Wales escorted by a police officer. When application was made to-day, Mr Oliphant, who appeared for M‘Govern, requested that only formal evidence should be taken. “ I must object to evidence being given of what the accused said when he was arrested,” said counsel. “All this court is concerned with is the application for extradition.” Mr Hunt: That is quite right. Charles Mallons, a police constable, of Sydney, produced the original warrant signed by a magistrate for the arrest of M'Govern. Witness had read the warrant to M'Govern in the Mount Eden prison on October 7. M'Govern had admitted that he was the person referred to in the warrant. Witness asked that M'Govern be remanded to appear at the Police Court at Sydney, and also, for that purpose, asked that the, accused be delivered into his custody. Mr Hunt made the order. M'Govern, with Constable Mallons, will leave for ■Wellington by the limited express tonight to connect with the Marama.
