AMATEUR BOOKMAKER FINED. DANNEVIRKE, October 7.

Ernest Friis, a labourer, -was unlucky in a double-laying venture. He was not only “ struck ” for a double, but was (caught by the police. Sergeant Martin said the defendant had been out of work for several weeks, and on Thursday last, for the first time, started laying Is doubles. He continued his operations on Saturday, and was caught by the police early in the afternoon. The magistrate admitted that it was not a bad case, but it was the Second within a short time, and he could not look on these offences lightly. The accused was fined £l5 and costs (10s).
