BALCLUTHA.
May 6.—The death occurred at Rosebank, Balclutha, on Sunday morning of Mr Thomas Lochheacl, an old and highlyesteemed resident of this district. The, deceased gentleman was born at Airdrie, near Glasgow, in 1840, and came to Ota go in the ship Nelson in 1562, having spent some time previously in Canada. The gold diggings opened in Otago the preceding year were the attraction. Mr Lochhead followed the diggings for some time, and then took up land at Te Houka. There for over half a century, he farmed with much success, his name being well known amongst the farming community as a breeder of good stock. He retired from active farming several years ago, taking residence at Rosebank, Balclutha, where he passed peacefully away oft Sunday morning in his' eightieth year. The late Mr Lochhead leaves. a widow and a family of five sons and four daughters vto mourn their loss. He was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends that he made during his 50 odd years' residence in the district. : Crops.—The crops in the Olydevale district —particularly the wheat crop —are much above the average, and, although the bulk of "it has had a drenching, close attention in keeping the stooks upright has prevented sprouting, and the sample will be a satisfactory one. One farmer assures' us that the average yield will bo quite 40 bushels to the acre. Leading-in is now general. Returned Soldier's' Association.—The total number of active members on the roll of the. Clutha branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association is 171, of which 41 were enrolled during the past month. Honorary members number 40.
