WAIKAIA.
May 12.—Very heavy, keen frosts and cold nights prevailed during last week, which were followed by bright, sunny days. Signs of winter are too, m the rapid yellowing of the foliage. School Committee.—The following were elected to the new committee tr-Messrs J. M'Kissock (chairman), D. Wilson (secretary and treasurer), W. Ayson, J. Dennis, and J. M'Kay. . , Personal.—Miss M'Donald has been appointed second assistant at the Waikaia School. The school is closed for the term holidays.—On Thursday evening, Bth inst., a number of men met in the Coronation Hall, Waikaia. In the absence of Mr Colin Robertson Mr John Milne was asked to take the chair. He in an able manner introduced Mr Rodgers (Invercargill), who gave, an interesting and instructive lecture on hydro-electric power: its uses and value to the inhabitants of Southland. In about three years it is expected that the Scheme will be in full working order. Mr Alex. Cameron (Wendonside) proposed that the scheme be adopted, and on this being seconded it was carried. On the motion of Mr Clark a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer for his excellent and interesting address. Shooting Season. —Sportsmen have been successful in getting good_ bags of ducks. The largest one reported is of 40 ducks. _ General.—The grass and turnips are in good condition. The .dairy factory is said to be closing for the season at the end of May. Through so much rain falling during the summer-the honey crop has been less than in former seasons.
