CROMWELL.

.April, 7.—The Presbyterian Church held their annual garden fete last Saturday week. Though there was a rather poor attendance, still those who were at the fete loyally supported the cause for which it was held, and the consequence was that something approaching £6O was realised. It was an ideal day, and one and all enjoyed themselves. The young ladies of the church controlled ..a lolly stall, which added materially to the success of the afternoon. Among other attractions Was a shooting gallery, which proved to be a very popular source of =enjoymen{. Some exciting races both for young arid old were k'eenly contested. The Church Committee, under the able ■direction--of the Rev. W. P. Rankin, M.AV, deserve credit for their excellent management of the afternoon's enjoyment. The afternoon tea pavilion, under the, control of the ladies, was well patronised by those present. Fruit-growing.—The Ripponvale orchard district i« at present showing to advantage. In many of the sections tho young fruit trees are making a good appearance, the majority being apples. They are sturdy-looking trees, and in a year or two should be in full bearing. - 'Ratepayers' Meeting.—At a meeting of ratepayers held a few days' back it was unanimously agreed that the Borough Council be empowered to fall in with the Athen£sum Trust's scheme of building a combined athenaeum and council chambers. There are to be a library room, a reading room, a town clerk's office, and a general room for meetings, the Borough Council to pay a' subsidy of £26 per annum. There is no doubt that the building will be an acquisition to the town, and will be both a uso and an ornament. Welcomed Back. —Returned soldiers' are gradually coming back to Cromwell, the last being Private P: Hosking, who once more set his foot his. native town last Monday. He was greeted on his arrival by an -enthusiastic crowd,' who gave Private Hosking a very hearty welcome. Speeches, of welcome were made, to which the returned soldier. suitably replied. The band, under Bandmaster Gordon, rendered appropriate music Bowling.—The bowling season is now rapidly drawing to a close. Altogether the Cromwell Club has had a very successful time of it. Some of the" members went : to Roxburgh last .Saturday week .to play; the Centre Shield fixture, and it is pleasing to note that Cromw.ell still retains the shield. The" Naseby Club, had/ secured the Jolly Memorial Cup from Clyde, but last Wednesday a Cromwell team, under the' control of the president of the local club, Mr G. M-Donald, journeyed to Naseby, and after an interesting coritest brought home their beloved cup. Clyde doesn't like this, and has sent in another challenge to the present holders!" The match will be played on ,'Wednesdav in Cromwell, wTieri' a very interesting time is expected, for it will be the. last contest of the season.
