OBITUARY.

MR C. O. KETTLE*

' The death of Mr Charles C. Kettle, formerly S.M. and District Judge at- Auckland, is reported by a Press Association message. Born at " Littlebourne House," Dunedin, in 1860, tho late Mr Kettle waa educated at the Otago, Boys' High School and Nelson College, and was admitted as 4 barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court in 1873. He was appointed a District Court Judgo for Manawatu and Taranaki districts, registrar (with extended powers) of the Supreme Court at New Plymouth, and was appointed a stipendiary magistrate in 189 CL In 1893 he became District Court judge for the Wairarapa distriot, in addition to Manawatu and Taranaki; District Court judge for the districts of Waikato and Thames, and senior stipendiary magistrate at Auckland in 1904. Deceased had the distinction oi. being the first New Zealander to be appointed to the judiciary. He retired a few months ago:
