LUMSDEN

June 10. —A very enjoyable function took place last Wednesday in Johnson's Hall, when the parishioners of All Saints' Anglican Church met for the purpose of expressing their appreciation of Miss Johneon's services as organist at the church for several years past. The Rev. A. H. Button, in asking Miss Johnson to accept a handsome gold wristlet watch, suitably inscribed, testified to the recipient's good qualities, and hoped her services would bo available to 'the church for many more years. Mr F. Unsworth responded for Miss Johnson, and said that any service she had rendered to the church had been willingly o-iven. and was a pleasure to herself. Musical items, and parlour games were indulged in, and dainty refreshments were handed round by the ladies. The function was voted very enjoyabls by all who attended. , Fatal Accident.--A distressing fatal accident occurred here on Thursday night, whereby Mr John Gordon, employad as a poster on the railways, lost his life through beuif run over whilst performing his duties as shunter. The night was very dark, end it is surmised that, the unfortunate man was either bumped by a waggon or tripped and fell under the trucks Medical aid was instantly available, but in epite of everything that could be done death resulted fii nbout 20 minutes. At the inquest a verdict was returned 'that deceased died from shock caused by injuries accidentally received whilst in "the execution of his duties, and a strong: rider added that the jury was of the opinion that had sufficient lighting provided by the Railway Department in the shape of overhead lamps, the accident would not have happened, and strongly urged the immediate crec'tion of adequate lighting to render the yard safe for shunting at night. The deceased leaves a young widow and three children, the eldest being four years of age. Improvements.—Mrs Maopherson's block

Social.—A welcome home social was tendered to Corporal Jno. M'Donald in the Longridge Schoolhouse on his return after two years in .France. The building was crowded, and a very pleasant evening wa3 spent in music and dancing, many speeches of welcomo testifying to the pleasure of tho speakers at seeing the corporal looking so well and hearty were maae, and tho singing of the National Anthem terminated a very pleasant evening.
