June 8. Very mild weather is now being experienced—more like spring than winter. Football.—A seven-a-side football tournament was held in Qucenstown on Monday fKing's Birthday) in aid of the Red Cross Funds. Teams visited from Roxburgh, Clyde, and Cromwell (2), while Queenstown was represented by two senior teams and a junior. The senior competition was won by Queenstown, with Roxburgh second; and Cromwell won the junior contest. There was a good attendance of the public, and the funds benefited to the extent of about £ls by means of collection boxes and a refreshment stall. A dance in the evening further augmented the funds. Obituary.—One of the oldest and most respctcod residents of Queenstown in the person of Mrs Jane Theresa M'Bride passed away on Monday last atl'er a short illness. The deceased lady, who was 74 years of age, had not enjoyed the best of health for some time, and on the Friday previous to her death was seized with a paralytic stroke. The lato Mrs M'Bride was a native of Larne, County Antrim, Ireland, and came out to New Zealand 52 year 3 ago, when she joined her sister, the late Mrs M'Ewan, who, with her husband, was settled at Nokomai. Shortly afterwards they came to Queenstown, where deceased was married to the late Mr John M'Bride. who was a member of the sawmilling and steamer firm of J. W. Robertson and Co. Subsequently Mr and Mrs M'Bride took over the Harp of Erin Hotel (now known as M'Brido's Family Hotel), Queenstown, from Mr M'Ewan. Mr M'Bride died a fewyears afterwards, but Mrs M'Bride carried on the hotel until about 10 years ago, when she leased the property and retired into private life. There was no one held in greater respect in Queenstown and district than tho lato Mrs M'Bride, and deservedly so, as she was of a most kindly and charitable disposition—ever ready to assist those in trouble or misfortune of any kind. She was an ideal hotelkeoper, and in the early days of the district the Harp of Erin was looked upon as a home by the miners coining in from the back districts. Of a family of two children, a son, Mr J. C. M'Bride, Queenstown, survives. The funeral took place at Queenstown on Wednesday, and was largely attended. The Rev. Father Corcoran conducted the burial service. - Wakatipu Licensing Committee.—The annual meting was held at Queenstown on Saturday last, the members present being Mesrs G. Cruiokshank, S.M. (chairman), A. Ford, G. F. Johnston, Jamea Mackenzie, S. A. Stevens, and D. F. Sutherland. With three exceptions, all .applications were granted without comment. The application of W. Cronin for renewal of license for the Commercial Hotel, . Waikaia, was adjourned until the September meeting on account of adverse reports put in by the police. In consequence of "the destruction by fire of the Nevis Hotel, the licensee asked to ba allowed to close the business for 12 months. The application was granted under tho Liquor Restriction Acfe The chairman said that a number of requests were received from hotolkeepers asking for a reduction in the license fee on account of early closing. He said the committee had no power to reduce the fees except in the case of accommodation licenses. It was agreed to allow country hotolkeepers to put out their outside lights at 11 p.m. Hotolkeepers in the boroughs would have to get permission from the local authoriteis before applications could be entertained by the committee. District Soldiers Farcwellcd.—At Queenstown on Monday afternoon Corporal W. D. Warren, home on final leave, was met by a number of his friends and was made the recipient of a combined sovereign and match case. The Mayor (who made tho presentation) and other speakers referred to the important part Corporal Warren had taken in the social and business life of the town. Reference was also made to the able manner in which he had conducted tho Lake Wakatip Mail, and all wished him good luck and a safe return. —On Wednesday evening last the residents of Arrowtown and district entertained Privates Robert L. Fletcher and Thomas J. Wilson, who were home on final leave, at a farewell social in the Athenfeum Hall. There was a largo attendance, Mr G. H. Romans presiding. Each was presented with a set of miltiary brushes. Appropriate addresses were given by Mr Romans and Rev. R. G. Coats.
