ROXUBRGH NOTES.
ROXBURGH, May 51. Messrs Alf. and Arthur Newland and R. Smith, who have joined the Seventeenth Reinforcements, were entertained by the citizens of Roxburgh at a farewell social last Monday evening. A very pleasant hour was spent with progressive euchre, which •was followed by supper and a short musical programme, after which the Mayor addressed the gathering. Ho congratulated the three guests upon then- patriotism, and on behalf of those present wished them good luck and a safe return. The gathering closed with the National Anthem. Messrs Newland and Smith took their departure on Wednesday morning. A large gathering assembled to see them off, and as the coach moved away three hearty cheers were given them. The Mount Benger Patriotic Committee (Roxburgh), at its meeting on Monday evening, made the following donations: Belgium £8; Serbia, £4; Y.M.C.A., £2; local ladies’ fund, £8; local relief fund, £l2; and school material fund, £2. Corporal W. Redman, who i-ecently received his discharge, was voted £5 towards the purchase of an ’ outfit of clothing. At a meeting some time ago it was decided to grant assistance from the local fund to any married man who enlisted, the nature of assistance being payment of rents and taxes and insurance premiums. Four cases were considered at'the last meeting of the_ committee. It was decided to pay the life insurance ' premium of one man while he is on active service, and inquiries are being made concerning the others. Five shillings per week is being paid the wife of another man.
