KAITANGATA NOTES.

KAITANGATA, May 30. Winter has set in at last. Rain started to fall here to-day, and will bo welcome. A very successful smoke concert was tendered to the returned soldiers at Fuell’s Hotel on Wednesday last. A number of past Mayors and councillors of the borough were present, including the leading men of the mine. Mr Robt. Aitchison (Mayor) was chairman. A number of toasts were honoured, and several songs were eung. Several young men who have passed as fit and were advised last week that they would not be required for some months are very indignant at the turn of events. It appears that the mines are suffering as a result of so many men leaving, and instructions were issued by the Defence Department that -the men would have to wait till December 31. Several of the men concerned have left their employment, and certainly do nob intend to return now they have volunteered. It is quite likely the difficulty will be overcome to allow these young men to get away with the 17th Reinforcements. Miss O. F. Frazer, who has been teacher at the Kaitangata Public School for about seven years, has received word of her promotion to mistress of the Owaka School. Miss Frazer will be much missed here. Mr W. Spears, another one of the staff, resigned. The Kaitangata Bowling Club gave a very successful evening in the Masonic Hall to the ladies who recently assisted in functions connected with the club. Liberal refreshments were provided, and dancing was kept up till an early hour of the morning.
