STONEHENGE.

LONDON, September 22. Stonehenge has been sold at auction It realised £5600.

[Stonehenge is a circular group of huge standing stones on Salisbury Plain. It is safe to say that no prehistoric monument in 'Great Britain has given rise to more speculation as to its origin, date, and purpose; but the riddle is still unsolved. Nennius (a ninth century scribe) asserts that it was erected in commemoration of the 400 nobles who wore treacherously slain near the spot by Hengist in 472. Some of the triads of Welsh bards support this view, and its erection is attributed to Aurelius Ambrosius; but another Welsh bard states that it existed before the time of Aurelius. Several other theories have been advanced, the most popular of which is that it was originally a rude temple for tho observance of Druidic rites. Amongst archaeologists there seems to be A. balance of opinion in favour of tho sepulchral element being one of the objects for its erection. Some years ago Stonehenge was restored as far as possible to its original form (some of the blocks having fallen), and as tho owner (Sir Edmund Antrobus) co-operated with archaeologists societies in this work, there seems reason to suppose that it has been purchased by some person or body who will maintain it as a national antiquity.]
