AUCKLAND TOPICS.
(Fsou Ode Own U’ORnESPOKDENT.! June 21. Although matters at Ellcrslie arc naturally quiet after the Great Northern meeting, there is nevertheless enough doing to make it plain that meetings ahead arc receiving consideration from our trainers. Nearly every mentor has one or more of his team stretching out in. fast work, some having the big southern meetings in view, while others arc polishing up candidates for the Pakuranga hunt meeting, now drawing close. Other horses have been turned out for a spell; but then, again, their places are taken by horses who have been resting during the autumn. Kauri King is one of those doing excellent work on the training track. Ho is intended for tho Gisborne meeting, after which ho goes on to Wellington, and probably to Riccarton. MacManemia is keeping Colonel Soult, Loloma, and Try Fluke busy. The two latter will fco sent to Wellington; and Try Fluke is worth remembering. Ho was not tuned up for the northern meeting, but nevertheless, ran fourth in tho best company up to six furlongs. He will be hard to beat, as he is improving all the time. Colonel Soult is supposed to bo going to Australia, but no definite decision has been arrived at yet.
The new owner of Nicornar is not going to hesitate about trying to get the purchase money back, and the son of Spalpeen is under orders for Trentham. Kl Gallo still has a big knee, but -ho is doing just enough steady work to keep in picture condition. I understand ho will go to Wellington; but the chances arc he will not race there, but bo sent for the National double at Riocarton. In. view of his jumping of country at Ellcrslic, his party may think it advisable to have him at Riccarten early in order that ho may get used to the big fences there, which arc more formidable than here. The disappointing Worcester was given a turn over the ponj' hurdles last week, and was shaping well. Two of our best handicap horses. Jack Delaval and Bedford, who have been resting since the autumn, are back in steady work. Monojack is another to make a reappearance. This is one of the best horses at EUcrslie—a fact backers would do well to remember. Valentine essayed the big fences twice last week—on the first occasion coming to grief, and on the other occasion baulking. Ohaminadc, who is now in I’. Jones’s stable, was tried over the small hurdles, but did not shape well. The Avondale and Taranaki Cups winner, Phosphorus, was offered at auction last week, but did not elicit a bid. Golden Glow looks better now than ever, and can be relied upon to take a power of boating in southern engagements. The Avondale Jockey Club has increased the Avondale stakes from 225sovs to 300 sovs. Quito a number of two-year-olds are haying the rough knocked off them; but it is too. early yet to criticise their prospects of becoming champions. If Blucstone goes south, he is a paying proposition.
