BARBAROUS CUSTOMS
LONDON, November 23. The District Commissioner for Southern Nigeria, in the course of an interview, described the exploration of the Eket district, where dwell the most bloodthirsty people in Africa. Their customs and ceremonies, he soys, remained unchanged from t the days of ancient Egypt, Secret societies still offered human sacrifices. One woman showed him fragments of charred bone, which, she declared, were her brother’s. Later, the missionaries complained of the maltreatment of school children by a society called the ghosts and the destroyers. In one case the missionaries rescued a girl who was about to be sacrificed. The head priest is accustomed to make the announcement that tho ghosts will oat to-day.
