THE DAVIS C"P CONTESTS. SYDNEY, October 23. . On his return to Australia on October 1, Horace Rice, a member of the Australian lawn tennis team which suffered defeat in America in the preliminary tie* for the Davis Cup, was reported to" have stated in the course of an interview that, while the Americans deserved their «uoces, the defeat of the Australians was chiefly duo to bad courts, which were soft and heavy. Rice now denies that he ever said the Australians were defeated owing to had courts. What, he said was that the courts were soft, and favoured the Americana’ style of play—viz., volleying—as against the Australians’ reliance on ground work. Rice admits that the team met better men than themselves. -*■
