ST. KILDA v. PHCENIX. Eight rinks from the St. Kilda Club and many lady friends journeyed to Oamaru to try conclusions with the Phoenix Club. Favoured with good weather and a keen, true green, a pleasant game resulted in a win for Phoenix by 40 points. The visitors are loud in their praises of the generous hospitality extended to them by their fellow players of the “White City,” who made the most of every opportunity to make their visitors very welcome. The President, in welcoming the visitors, expressed his pleasure at the presence of the president of the New Zealand Bowling Association (Mr J. J. Marlow), who, in reply, said that, under the new constitution, whilst every centre had absolute local control, the rules and management of the association ensured the game being played under uniform conditions from North Cape to Bluff. Mr W. Jacobsen (president of the St. Kilda Club) suitably acknowledged the kindness shown to his fellow members and the ladies. Following are the results: —
NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION, meeting of the Executive Committee of the Bowling Association of New Zealand was held in the secretary’s office on rr.day evening, and was attended by Messrs ' % rl ° w (President), J. 11. Hancock, J. Allan, C. K. Smith, and W. C. Allnutt. Ihe programme for the first dominion tournament at Dunedin, which will commence on January 12, was before the meeting, and members expressed the hope that the request of the Executive Committee, that each player would wear flannels and the colours of his club, would be adhered to by all. A question oe bowl-testing. A letter was received from the Christchurch Centre, asking that a spare bowltesting machine which was in the possession of the association should bo forwarded to ■it. as the local players objected to the expense of sending their bowls to Dunedin lor testing. In connection with this matter, the Auckland Centre wrote stating that it had never yet had a testing machine, and did not consider that it required one. The Chairman stated that the northern members did not approve of buying a machine from the old association, but he did not know why the other centres should not buy a. tester from the Dunedin Centre if tney wanted it. Air Smith questioned whether they couid legally deal with the matter. They should arrange to send one of their two machines to Christchurch as soon as possible, but a difficulty that arose was as to whether there was a man in Christchurch who could stamp bowls. The Chairman stated that at present both the North and South Island stamps would bo accepted at the coming tournament, as the new association had not yet agreed to a dominion tost. Air Allan said he thought Mr \V. A. Scott’s test should be adopted for the South Island until something better could be decided upon. The North Island could not object unless it had something better to put forward. Why should not the association fix the old green test as the standard for the dominion? After some further discussion Air Hancock moved—“ That Air W. A. Scott bo appointed an official bowl-tester for the association. It would perhaps bo a difficult matter to get a man in Christchurch who was capable of altering bowls, which was a very different matter from testing and stamping. However, that was doubtless a matter for arrangement by the Christchurch people. Mr Allan further moved that one of the association’s testing machines should be leased to the Christchurch Centro until a standard system of testing was adopted by the association. He thought the Christchurch people should be asked to recommend a man as tester. Both motions wore ultimately carried. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were received from the Southland and South Canterbury Centres, asking that matches should bo arranged between them and the Australian team which visits the dominion about Christmas.—The association to use its beet endeavours to arrange for these matches. A letter was received from the Nelson and Alarlborough Centro, asking permission to form a centre under the New Zealand Bowling Association. —Granted; constitution and rules to be returned when approved bv the association. An application for affiliation by the West Harbour Club was granted. A requisition by tho Auckland Centro to hold a tournament at Christmas was granted. GENERAL. It was decided, on the_ motion of Air Allnutt, to call for competitive designs for a certificate for the association, and to offer a prize of £5 5e for the successful tenderer
and £3 3s and £1 Is for the second and third. The committee then considered a draft of some proposed amendments to the constitution and laws of. the game, and, after discussion, several of these were adopted.
