THE SULZER CASE
NEW YORK, October 21. Mr Sulzer has accepted nomination as the Progressive candidate for a vacancy in the New York State Assembly. Mr John Hennessy, Sulzer’s friend, explained to a crowded meeting that Sulzer while (governor of the State, had resisted every attempt at bribery. This was distasteful to Tammany, which thereby lost some power. Mr Hennessy did not believe Mr Glynn would be more pliant, and no doubt Tammany would also find some reason for his removal. Sulzer had never been Governor of New York State except nominally. He took the orders that were given him until he was unable to stand Boss Murphy’s exactions any longer, and then he rebelled because his conscience had reasserted itself. October 22. The majority in the Assembly electorate for which ex-Governor Sulzer has been nominated are Jews. The belief is growing that the impeachment episode may recoil upon Tammany.
