JDUNEDIN HIGHLAND RIFLES. The annual shooting match Past v. Present members of the above corps was held on Saturday, at the range, Pelichet Bay. Unfortunately for the ex-members they were unable to have their usual strong shooting team this year, and were considerably handicapped by the absence of old shooting comrades, included , amongst the absentees being Ex-captain Stoneham, who was prevented by slight indisposition from txring present. The conditions of the match were seven shots and a sighter at 200 a.nd 500 yards. The day was a bit puzzling for shooting to the ex-members, and at the longer range the light failed completely, and the last men to lire did ho at considerable disadvantage, the targets being practically invisible. The " has beens" were defeated, but not disgraced. The Dunedin Pipe Band attended in full force, and kindly assisted to enliven the proceedings with national music. _ A in; teh for lady friends was also held, bringing a good number of competitors to the firing-point, amd keen interest was taken in the shooting of the fair sex, and some good scores were registered. The conditions were five shots at 200 yards. The winners being as follow's: —Mrs J. Arm-it, 21; Mrs D. Gillespie, 17; Mrs J. Burt, 17'. At the conclusion of the firing, Cap--tai,n Dempster, on behalf of the. corps, welcomed the ex-members to the range, and expressed his pleasure in meeting thorn again this year, as it would be highly probable h£ would bo added tc their number by the time the next match came round.' He regretted the absence of Excaptain Stoneham, but he was sure the exci'ptain would be with them in spirit, a,nd. he knew be was keenly disappointed at being unable to be with them. Naturally, he was pleas?d the present members had turned the tables this year, but hoped, if he fired for the ex-members next year, they would register a win. After presenting the prizes to the successful lady winners, he called for cheers for the exmembors, which was neartily responded to by the present members.
Ex-colouv-sergoant Moncrieff, in replying on behalf of the ex-members, said he was sorry they had not the services of their usual shooting team, as otherwise there would .have been a different finish. It was a great loss the absence of Ex-captain Stoneham to their team, this being the only match he has missed between the two teams. Although beaten this year they hoped to have a strong team next year. These friendly contests between the old and new members were conducive of much good, and it tended to keeping alive the esprit de corps which existed between the past and present members. He thanked Captain Dempster and the corps for the handsome manner they had treated the exmembers, and l called fo'- cheers for the cops and the ladies, being responded to in good style. During the afternoon refreshments were kindly provided, and a very pleasent time was spent by all present. The following are the scores of the
