THE PANAMA CANAL
NEW YORK, January 24.
The Navy Board supports President Taft's- plea for fortifying the Panama, Canal, believing that the fortifications will prove an invaluable aid in transferring the American fleet from the Atlantic to the Pacific in war time. January 26. Alfred W. Dowsworth, the business manager of the New York Journal of Commerce, giving evidence before the House of Representatives' Ship Subsidy Committee, told of an attempt to buy the editorial support of his publication in favour of the American Government's purchase of the Panama Canal property from the De Lesseps Company. GUAYAQUIL, January 27. The United States is pressing a proposal to lease the Galapagos Islands for the purpose of a base to protect the Panama Canal. She is offering £7,000,000 for a 99 years' iease, and is guaranteeing Ecuador the sovereignty of the islands. The Ga-lapagos Islands are situated on or near the equator, and are 730 miles west of Ecuador, to which State they belong. The group consists of five principal and eight small islands, the largest being 60 miles-in length and 15 miles in breadth.
