RACING IN ENGLAND

THE GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE (handicap), of 2400sovs, including a. trophy value 125sovs. About four miles and 856 yards. Mr Stanley Howard's b g Jenkinstown, by Hackier—Playmate, 9yrs, 10.5 (R. Chadwick) 1 Mr C. G. Assheton-Smith's b g Jerry M., by Waimsgate, dam by Luminary —Quinine, 7yrs, 12.7 (E. Driscoll) ..." 2 Mr R, H. Hall's oh h Odor, by Chevele d'Or—Jessamine, 9yrs, 9.7 (ear 9.8) (Owner) 3 Prince Hatzfeldt's b g Garsey, by Kersey—Fiction, aged, 10.7 (E. R. Morgan) 4 Twenty-one others ako' started. Rathvale, Hercules 11, and Fetlar's Pride headed the charge to the first fence, at which Shady Girl, Judas, and The Lurcher fell. The second fence proved fatal to the chance of Wickham, Rathvale, and General Fox, and ■ Hercules II went on from Fet-

lar's Bride, Jerry M., Carsey, Springbok,Caubeen, and Glenside, these being clear of the others, who were headed by Captain Farreil. At the third fence Brineoge refused, Lord Chatham and Bloodstone fell, Phsetbon was knocked over by a loose (horse, and Odor made a bad blunder. Captain Farreil refused at the fence before GBeecher's Brook, where Albuera and Paddy -iMaher came to grief and Bushido was knocked off his legs. Fetlar's Pride cleared •iValentinie's Brook just in front of Jerry 5M., where Hercules II got rid of his jockey ■and Precentor II became tailed off. Soon •""afterwards Jerry M. assumed the command ;trom Springbok and Fetlar's Pride, these "three being well clear of Logan Rook, Carsey, and Caubeen. Coming into the i-aceeourse Fetlar's Pride again took up the a-unning, closely attended by Jerry M. and Carsey. Odor then began to make up his tground, and was first over the water jump Srom Glenside, Fetlar's Pride, and Jerry M., theee four being clear of Jenkinstown, Springbok, and Carsey, who were followed tat another interval by Logan Rock and Caubeen, Precentor II being a long way 3ast. At the third fence in the country ' Caubeen came down -and the next proved fatal to the chance of Glenside. Spririg- " fook, who was hopelessly beaten, was pulled up at Beecher's Brook, which Precentor II refused.- Jerry M. then took up the run- " ning again from Odor and Jenkinstown, whilst soon after clearing Valentine' Brook Logan Rock (who was going well at the time) was knocked over by a loose horse. : A little further on Jenkinstown headed Jerry M., Odor and Fetlar's Pride being next, whilst Carsey was last. -Jenkinstown and Jerry M. jumped the last fence side by side, but from that point the former began to draw away, and won a little cleverly by three lengths, the same .distance separating Jerry M. from Odor. Carsey was fourth and Fetlar's Pride the only other to complete the course. Time by "Benson's chronograph, lOmin 4 4-56-ec.
