August 24.— The weather continues to be very unsettled, with a goo^ deal of ram, and tfois him retarded sowing operations. A Uttte "wheat has •been eoym, and tftefawners »ro anxious for the ground to dry up to get on with tire work. We have had bob* very hard froste, and this has retarded the growth of fche grass, and as the turnips are nearly done feed as not too plentiful. A lot of l«mbs have made their appearance. Mr Heads has considerably over 100 skipping about the^paddocks. General.— Mr and Mis H. M'Neil, of OiwUe Hill, returned last week alter an extended trip 'to the Old Country, having had a pleasant time.— The spinsters, batohelors, and benedicts of Clarendon intend giving a ball in the Clarendon Hall on September 4. — A fir^e occurred in the eohoolmaster a residence at Milbu-m on Saturday, but was extinguished before much damage was clone- — The evening service at the church «r Swnda* night was largely a memorial
one in nfemory of Mr* Ira D. Sankey. The Rev. W. Howes spoke on some of the incidents of the sweet singer's life, and some of the late composer's hymns were sung, the choir rendering "Hiding in Thefe," 0113 of Mr Sankey's favourites. Concert and Social. — The concert and social 'to celebrate the opening of the new school was largely attended, although the night was very wet and dark. Mr T. H. Russell was in the chair in the unavoidable absence of Mr M. Henderson. After the concert refreshments, provided by the ladies, were handed round, and after the usual rotes of thanks the floor was cleared, and dancing was indulged in for an hour or two. Mrs Hare, Misses Ross and Henderson, and Rev. Howes- played the accompaniments during the evening. The following is the programme: — Screen song, SohoolgirJs; solo ("The skipper"), Mr Amott; recitation (Scotch), Miss Hamilton (encored) ; song ("The valley by the sea"), Mrs Hare; reading (Scotoh), Mr Somerville; recitation, Mr Christie; duet ("money matters").
