KURIWAO GORGE

August 22.— A very successful con-cert and dance was held in the schoolhouse on Friday night, 14th inst. The night was beautifully fine, and the school was well filled. MrThos. MTaggart (chairman of committee), in a few opening remarks, said the conceit was in aid of the school funds to help to carry on the neoesaary work to educate the -children. The first item on the programme was an overture by Miss Paterson •(piano) and Mr J. Kean (violin). They also opened the second part with another selection. Songs were excellently rendered fey Miss Turnbull /Waipahi) and Miss Gnllesple, Mesdames Tdewson and Robertson, Messrs Nicholson, Oairney. Donnovan. Kean, M'Guiness, Loohie, I Johnston, and Brown. Recitations were {riven by Mes . srs T*raser, M'Guiness, and Kiohokon, and Miss Kean played- a pianoforte solo. Mr Donnovan besides hia comic songa, gave a selection on the bagpipes. All the performers ~*were heartily applauded, and several of •them encored. The accompaniments were capably played by' Miss Patereon. lea end cakes were handed round and greatly enjoyed, the ladies of the disbriot having kmdty brought with thejn well-filled baskets. The pyom was them cleared for dancm*. the music beine supplied by the Kean toothers, ittWle Mr P Orr officiated as M.C. Bancing waa kept going- until 3 A.m., all going home well pleased with the njg-ht s enjoyment.
