In the Davis Cup lawn tennis competition in England Wright (America) beat Wilding (New Zealand), 6-8, 6—3. 6—3, 7—5, and Brookes (Victoria) beat Behr (America), 4—6, 6—4. 6—l.6 — 1. 6—2. Brookes beat Gore: 7—5, 6—l. and 7—5. Wilding defeated Roper-Barrett: 1 6. 6—4, 6—3, and 7—5.7 — 5. Australasia thus beat Britain on the first day of the play. . The Davis Cup was first offered in America for the world's championship, and was won twice in succession by Dwtght and Da via. The brothers Doherty then captured it, and the play for it has been for three y©*i6 tliecrowning event of the English lawn tennis season.
