At the Maclean regatta (New South Wales) R. Arnst (New Zealand) won the £50 handicap with ssec start from the scratch man. Thoroughgood defeated M. Mitohell, who had 60seo start, by a length. Arnst had previously followed a two and a-half mile race between John Mitchell and John Searle, and when 100 yards from the finish he sprinted ahead of Searle, whom Mitchell defeated by 10 lengths. Miss Annette Kellerman, the champion Australian lady swimmer of the world, has caused a sensation in New York by trying to swim from the main channel leading to the landing-place in New York Harbour. The White Star liner Celtic, by which she wa3 a passenger, was blocked by a dense fog on May 1. Miss Kellerman donned her swimming suit, intending to swim ashore, but the ship's officers objected, whereupon her press agent shed bitter tears.
