The Swedish Government asks the Reksdag for authority to negotiate with the Norwegian Storthing with a view to establishing a common basis for dissolving the nnion and for the future relations oi Sweden, and Norway.

King Oscar consents to dissolve the union between Sweden and Norway, though the task is painful, believing that a union without mutual accord will not bring any real advantage to Sweden

Norway is gratified with Sweden's attitude in the recent crisis.

In a meeting of the Norwegian Students' Society held rsoeoitly the Union crisis was discussed. Tlie president read a paper ia which occurred the following sentences, which, it is said, have been " bi^-ly approved of both within the society and by tho a&3ceral jrublie" : — "To everrfching- else rnusfc finally be added the fundamental difference between ourselves and the Swedes as to business interests, national character, politi,cal customs, and manners. We always look westward, w-e feel that our way of reasoning makes us akin to the English and to the Scotch ; we admire the liberty and independence of those two nations, and the way in which they make use of these great gifts ; and. above everything- else, we look upon British trustworthiness as tbe political idea 2."
