REDUCTION IN MEAT FREIGHTS.
j Seeing that a good deaJ of attention has : I recently been directed to the freights on ; produce charged by the New Zealand and t the Shaw, Savill Shipping Companies, it is ' of interest to note that about six months back these companies made a reduction in the meat freights, arranging an extension contract something similar to the dairy produce contract. The old contract between the shipping , companies and the meat companies had . still two years to run, and in consideration i of the extension of that contract for an i additional term of three years — or five years in all from date, — the shipping companies : agreed to make the following freight reductions: — On mutton and lamb, l-16d per lb and 2| per cent. ; on beef, l-16d per lb i and 2£ per cent. This reduction to take effect during the summer months — viz., from December to May. For th& remainder of the year — viz., from June to November, — when the meat output is comparatively srnall^ the freight will be raised i by l-16d per lb on the old rate for mutton ' and lamb, whilst beef will remain at the old rate.
