FREIGHT ON GRAIN.
For some time back the question has been eagerly debated amongst shippers as to the likelihood of the 15s freights on grain to London which obtained last season coming into force this year. We have reason to believe that although the shipping companies are making strenuous efforts to keep freights up to the present figure — viz., 20s on grain, — yet the freight market is far from strong at the present time. There is thus 9. probability that sooner than allow their vessels to go away empty one or other of the companies may break the 20s rate and quote 15s, in which case the others will follow suit. This, of course, is likely to have an important bearing upon both the wheat and the oate market.
