MINING,
The river is fairly low, and but little drift appears to be travelling. The First Chance has not recoveied. all her buckets — in fact, one-half of them has been lost, and will never be recovered.
The Bdndigo has closed down, which, doubtless, spells liquidation for the company.
What a history some of the dredging companies have had Who will write it? To say the least oi it, it would be interesting reading — a succession of losses ; the people feverishly scrambling for shares in anticipation of speedily becoming rich on the gold won from the river — gold that never was won. The boom was a gamble, pure and simple, between the liver and a dredging company, and nine times out of ten the river won, will continue to ■win, and greedily allure for furtheT stakes. He would bs a courageous man who would •write the history of the dredging boom failures. Tho people know them too wsll, and realise that onlj* -successes are extolled, but failures — never!
The Sailors' Bend put in a fail week's work, tut had, owing to an accidemt to the hangers, come lost time towards the end of tho week.
The Manuh«rikia was working the full week, plus -the Sunday, -and had a return of 128oz.
The Clyde dredge continues working opposite the mouth of the Manuherikia River, but I have not heard what* her return was for the •week. This dredge also works on Sunday. Tne Alexandra -Lead has all the top hamper removed, necessary to give place for the elevator andl lisis in a m«st suitable position for the -erection of the elevator, which, with the exception of the buckets, has arrived on the ground.
The repairs on the Molyneux Hydraulic are about finished, and tho dredge will resume operations as soon as a supply of water for the paddock oan be obtained from th® town race.
The. Golden Beach ia aJso idle. It appears that no water can be obtained through the race to fill the paddock. Truly, the h-ost is not a benefit to some driedgir.g companies. The ground that the Erterprise No. 1 could operate on successfully having been worked out, she has been strut down for good
