THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.

HOKITECA, May 1. A very large and representative public meeting, including delegates from Canterbury, Nelson, Westport, and all other W-esfc Coast centres, was held in the Town Hall this evening for the purpose of urging upon the Government the necessity of proceeding with much greater speed with the construction of the Midland railway and to let the Otira tunnel by contract. It was stated that the exports from the West Coast last year exceeded one million, and are likely to be doubled when the railway is completed. All the speakers, including several members of Parliament, were in favour of borrowing a sufficient amount to^ finish all the main trunk lines. The meeting was the most enthusiastic ever held here, and it was resolved to continue agitating till the wishes of the people ( from Canterbury and Westland were complied with.
