INTERFERING WITH THE POLICE.

"WAIHI, May 1. A- 'disgraceful scene occurred on Saturday night, when the police, who were arresting a drunken man, were assailed by a hooting, yelling mob, who raised 1 the cry " Australians to the rescue !" The police were stoned, and several windows broken. Eventually tho police were rushed, and, the prisoner carried off by friends. Several prominent citizens ' attempted to pacify the orowd, but in vain. Sergeant Sheehan and the constables were bruised about the head and bodies. Subsequently tho man was rearrested, and upon the president of the Miners' Union addressing the crowd they became quieter, bitt followed the police to the station hooting. Mr Kenrick, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, was prominent in. attempting to get the crowd to behave themselves.

A SECOND CASE.

NAPIER. May 1. A disturbance took place at Port Ahuriri on Saturday evening. A man named Joseph Farrelly was being arrested for drunkenness, when he became violent, and the constable called for assistance, andl a man named James Knowles proceeded to help him. Farrelly knocked Knowlee on the face, and a crowd' which had collected hustled Knowles and the policeman, and "Fairelly got away. Later on Constable Esson appeared, and with. Constable Melleop found Farrelly in a yard off Hardinge road. The man again turned on the constables, beating and kicking furiously, while a crowd which had collected ridiculed and hooted the policeAfter a time Constable Macalkter cams on the scene, and Farrelly was overpowered. Constable Mellsop had the back' of one of his hands badly mangled by the nuoi's teeth. Farrelly was to-day fined £6 and costs for ditorderly conduct ancl resisting the police.
