Country Sales. — Dalgety and Co. (Limited) report having held their fortnightly sale at BalcKitha on Friday, the 3id inst., when they yarded 1305 sheep and 20 head of cattle. J.he attendance of farmers was not so large as usual, but, notwithstanding, the demand for sheep was fairly good, and full market rates were obtained. Their entry included some really first-class young ewes, which realised \ip to 245, while sound-mouthed ewes brought up to 225. Their sales were.: 150 four and six-tooth ewes at 245, 747 two-tooth ewes at 225, 44 sound-mouthed ewes at 225, 53 twotooth forward wethers at 19s, 188 lambs at 15s, 48 two-tooth ewes at 20s 3d, 21 fat wethers at 21s 6d, 43 aged ewes at 10s to 16s. Cattle were dull of sale, and, with the exception of one large line of very forward store bullocks, a large part of the entiy was passed. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) report holding their usual fortnightly sale at Clinton on Thursday last. There was not a large yarding at this centre, but what were forward made good prices. Two-tooth ewes sold to 22s 6d ; store wethers (forward) to 19s ; and store lambs from 14s 6d to 15s. The next day they held their u=ual fortnightly sale at Balclutha, where, as at Clinton, good prices were realised,

four-tooth ewes selling to 22s 6d, and fullmouth (failing) at 15s 6d. Cattle (of -which, they offered a considerable number on account of Mr David Fea, whose yarding was the best seen there for many months) were slack of sale, farmers not being yet prepared to buy their winter supplies. This line sod from £7 7s 6d to £6 7s 6d. Pigs were very hard to sell, as indeed they are everywhere else at the present time. Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report having held their usual monthly sale at Palmerston on Monday, the 6th inst. There was only a small entry of sheep, but cattle were again in over-supply. There was a large gathering of farmers and dealers in attendance, all anxious to buy sheep: consequently each lot as it was put up was eagerly competed for, and changed hands at highly, satisfactory rates. We sod: For Mr James Geddes (Palmerston), 1 pen of crossbred ewea (two four, and six-tooth) at 23s 7d, 1 pen oj. store wethers (two, four, and six tooth) at 19s, 1 pen of store lambs at 15s 3d. Cattle on the other hand were neglected, and most difficuH; to place, and to effect sales greatly reduced prices had to be accepted. We sold stock on account of Messrs James Geddes, Pat Quinn, Hugh Fraser, J. Gillies, T. Hodgetts, D. Miller (all of Palmerston), Don. Muriay, Jas. Ritchie (Dunback), George Coutts (Stoneburn), A. Aitchison (Hampden), and F. F. Neill (Waikouaiti). We quote full and failing-mouth ewes at from 15s to 18s ; sound-mouth ewes at from 19s to 20s 6d ; young ewes at up to 23s 7d; wethers at from 15s to 21s 3d; lambs at from 14s 9d to 15s 3d ; three-year-old steers at from £4 10s to £5 ss; two-year-old steers, £3 to £4; 18 months' old stsers and heifers, £1 10s to £2 ; yearlings, 20s to 255 ; calves. 12s to 20s ; cows (springers) at from £4 10s to £5 10s ; dry cows at from 25s to £3. Rabbitskins. — Small catalogues were submitted _at Monday's auction sales, being made up chiefly ot* off-season's skins. Any winter or siJvei-grey skins were keenly competed for, while other classes sold up to values lately; ruling. Quotations : Outgoing winters, 9^d to llfd ; autumns, 7|d to 9d ; springs, 6|d to 7fd ; summers, 6d to 7d ; runners and suckers, 41d to aid ; silver greys, to 24d. Horsehair, 15d to 16Jd. Skeepskins and Hides. — No sales held sine© last report. Fat and Tallow. — A fair demand exists with, little quotable change in values, and consignments are being cleared at the following prices : Best rendered tallow, 18s fo 20s; medium do, 15s to 17s 6d ; inferior do, 12s to 14s ; best caul fat, 14s to 15s ; rought fat, 12s to 14s per cwt. Grain. — Oats : The business passing is on a small scale. While the quantity being sent forward from the country is not large it is, however, sufficient to meet the present demand both for coastal shipment and local consumption. Late values are fairly well maintained for feed lines, if sound. For milling lines, however, prices are, if anything, easier. Quotations : Prime milling, Is 8d to Is B£d ; good to best feed, Is 7d to Is 8d; inferior and medium, Is 4d to Is 6d per bushel (sacks extra). Wheat : A few parcels of new wheat are now offering from the north, but millers arc not, inclined to biiy freely at prices asked. Stocks of old wheat are now much reduced, and prime quality has still a good l sale, but medium is more or less neglected, and difficult to qttit at anything 1 over fowl wheat prices. lhere is a good local demand for the latter, although present quotations fail to bring many coastal orders. Quotations : Prime milling, 3a 6d to 3s 8d; medium do (nominally), 3s 2d to 3s sd ; whole fowl wheat. 3s to 3s Id ; broken and damaged. 2s 6d to 2s 9d (sacks extra). Potatoes. — Consignments coming forward are mostly white sorts, for which there is a fair den.and at from £7' to £7 10s per ton (bags in). There is p- good inquiry for Derwents for forward delivery, but growers are anticipating a rise in values, and are not anxious to sell. v Chaff. — Prime oaten sheaf is not over plentiful, and meets with a ready sale. The bulk of the. chaff now coming in is, however, of medium quality, and this is hard to quit at late values, while discoloured and light chaff has little or no inquiry. Quotations : Prime oaten sheaf, £3 10s to £3 12s 6d ; extra to £3 15s ; medium, £3 to £3 ss ; light and discoloured, £2 10s to £2 15s per ton (bags extra). Hay — The marker, is well supplied. Best clover and ryagrass hay. is selling at from £2 15s to £3 6s per ton (pressed, ex truck). Straw — Good bright oaten and wheaten 13 inquired for, the former realising up to 455, and the latter to 35s per ton (pressed, ex truck).
