While this was only f a very moderate entry, competition at the ■ commencenient of the sale was somewhat void of animation, prices obtained bejng barely up t6 last week's. Further on in the proceedings the demand became more active, when slightly higher prices were secured, though towards the close buyers were leSB keen, and to effect sales lower prices had to be accepted. Best crossbred wethers brought 22s to 24a 6d; about a dozen show sheep, extra heavy, brought 25s to 27s 6d ; medium to good, 19s 6d to 21s 6d; best do ewes, 19s 6d to 23s 9d; medium, 15s to 18s 6d. Pigs. — 206 were penned, the greater portion suckers and small sorts, which met with good competition. All sorts, indeed, were in good demand, and late rates readily obtaining. Suckers brought 133 6d to 15s 6d, slips 16a to 18s 6d, stores 19s to 255, porkers 28s to 355, light baconers 33s to 445, heavy do 48s 6d to 555. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) sold one pen of porkers at 31s. The National Mortgage and Agency Company (Limited) penned 42, and sold : For Messrs J. Preen (Deborah) and others, baconers to £2 18s, porkers to 365, stores 24s 6d to 27a, suckers to 14s 6d. Country Sales. — The Otago Farmers' Cooperative Association of New Zealand (Limited) report:— We held our usual fortnightly stock sale on Friday, December 9, at the Corporation Yards, Balclutha. when we yarded and sold at satisfactory prices 98 head cattle, 200 sheep, and 21 pigs, the whole of our entry changing hands at values about equal to late rates. There was a good attendance, and bidding was fairly animated throughout the auction.
Sheepskins. — The demand for these continues strong, a-"d all submitted for sale ar<? readily placed, dry merinos fetchiug sid to 7*d; best fine halfbred do, 7Jd to 8d ; medium, s^d to 7d ; best dry crossbred — fine 7d to 7|d, ordinary do sid to 6Jd. inferior 4Jd to 5d per lb. Rabbi tskins. — No auction sales this week, but the market is firm at late rates.
Hides. — There were no sales held since last report. Quotations then given will doubtless be obtained this week. Fat and Tallow.— A fair demand exists, and
late rates are still maintained. Best rendered country lots fetch 17s 6cl to 183 ; medium, 15s 6d to 16s 6d; inferior, 14s to 14s 6d ; best clean caul fat, 16s to 16s 6d ; medium, 14s 6d to 15a 6d; inferior, 12s 6d to 13s 6d per cwt (ex store). Grain. — "Wheat : There is no improvement to note in the demand, and quotations for milling are merely nominal — say, for prime northern, velvet and Tuscan 3s 7d to 3s Bd, good to best 3s 3d to 3s 6<3, medium, and whole fowls' wheat 3s to 3s Id, broken a-ncl inferior 2s 3d to 2s lOdl (ex store, sacks extra, net). Oata : This market is firm, late prices being fully maintained. Prime bright Gartons for export fetch 13 7£cE to Is 8d; best bright milling Sutherlands, la 6Jd to Is 7d ; best bright short feed, Is 5Jd tola 6d; medium. Is 3d to Is 5d (ex store, Sacks extra, net). Barley: Only small lots for feed and milling are being occasionally placed, fetching from Is 9d to 2a (ex store, sacks extra). Potatoes. — Market bare of both old and new. Good old Derwenfs are fetching thi3 week £3 103 to £4; medium, £2 10s to £3 ss; new kidneys, £12 to £18 per ton (ex store, sacks weighed in, net). Chaff. — The market is now quite bare; price, in consequence, shows a further upward tendency. Quotations : For prime, £3 15s to £4 ; good to best, £3 5s to £3 12s 6d; medium, £2 15s to £i (ex truck, sacks extra, net).
Straw has. a fair demand, and, with about no more than sufficient for requirements coming forward, prices remain steady — say, from 30s to 35s per ton (ex truck, net).
