THE MATINEE BENEFIT.
The kindness of Mr Muwjrove's Comi*. Opera Company in preferring their services for the assistance of the fund being raised in aid of the sufferers by the wreck not supported by the public to the extent that might have been expected, considering the worthy object in view. The attendance was somewhat disappointing, and the total proceeds amounted to £19 10s. out of which some £2 5s will be required for expenses, leaving a balance of about £17. 5s for which amount a cheque has been! forwarded to his Worship the Mayor. Mr Hudson (Mr ilusgrove's general manager) is somewhat disappointed with the result, as he looked forward to better support from those desirous of doing something in the direction of augmenting tho fund. The whole company and staff gave their services gratuitously, and " The Thirty Thieves," the piece chosen for the occasion, received a treatment at their hands that left nothing to be desired, the audience apparently ieenly enjoying tha i production. His Worship tbe Mayor, who van present during part of the performance, has sent the following letter to Mr Hudson: " I beg to thank you most sincerely for tho splendid matinee performance given by your company this afternoon in aid of the fund for assisting sufferers by the sad wrecta of the s.s. Elingamite. Business engagements which I could not postpone prevented me-being during the whole performance, and this I rogrot, as the opera was given in its'vjentircty, and thoroughly enjoyed by all present, if plaudits go for anything. I would aek you to convey to tnci management, the performers, orchestra, ana working staff my sincere thanks for their, generouc and timely assist:>nce, given sat spontaneously, notwithstanding the aamtional work entailed and inconvenience ta aIL and regret that the sympathetic ::üblici did not respond by patronising-the performance in greater numbers for the tcncUß of the fund and to show ,their appreciation of the kindheartedneis which. prompted ona and all of your company to give tnis matinee."
