President, Mr W. Smith ; vice-president, Mr J. Turnbull; Stewards — Messrs W. Knott, A. Bacon, A. Grant, W. A. Turnbull, J. Smeaton, J. Spence, G. Ruthven, P. Sinclair, T. Aitken, Jno. Turnbull, J. Hislop; judge, Mr John Fleming; treasurer, Mr J. Imrie; starter, Mr H. Gourley; handicapper, Mr G. Dowse; timekeeper, Mr E. Hogg; clerk of course, Mr A. Imrie; clerk of scales, Mr A. Grant; secretary, Mr A. F. Quelch.

The spring meeting of the Taieri Amateur j Turf Club was held on the Dunedin Jockey | Club's racecourse at Wingatui yesterday. Failing to come to terms with the owners of the course formerly used by them, the club secured j the use of the Wingatui course, but they are in hopes that next year they will be back on their own ground again. The day was fine, though a violent gale blew from the south-west, making things very unpleasant for everybody. The attendance* was large. The Right Hon. Mr Seddon, Premier, went out in the morning, and was welcomed by Mr W. Smith, the president of the club. The Mosgi«l Band pl«yed"~a number of selections during the afternoon. The sum of £2837 10s was put through the totalisator, as against £2387 last year. . The racing was of a very interesting char- : actet throughout the day. The Trial Stakes brought out four competitors, of whom Sarchedon proved the best, beating Leorene and St. Ronald, the favourite, with ease. The Handicap Time Trot was a. surprise, Tap, ridden by the owner, beating Norseman, a hot favourite, and everything else, and paying the dividend of the day— £lß 18s. The Taieri Cup brought out six horses, and Ardnarff had little difficulty in annexing the event, though Tugela, the light weight, showed a turn of speed of which the public did sot seem to be cognisant. Lady Madge received most support in the Novel Handicap, and never left her backers iv doubt from start to finish. TugeJa, on her rattling form in the Cup, was in great demand in the Stewards' Purse, and fully justified the support she received by ■winning with ridiculous ease in lmin 36sec. The wind at the back of the course was very strong, and in all the events the horses had a hard struggle against it. The Handicap Time Trot was pulled off by Baxter, and the Flying Handicap by Mosca, who, being cleverly handled by her jockey, succeeded in jumping off with a clear lead of threp lengths, of which she was never dispossesesd. Donna Rosa was the popular fancy, having 227 supporters out of a Jotal of 439. Everything in connection with the meeting was well managed. We have to thank Mr Quelch, the courteous secretary, for information supplied to oar reporter. The following are the results : TRIAL STAKES HANDICAP, Of 25sovs; second horse to receive ssovs out of the stakes. One mile. 114 — J£r D. Samuel's eh c Sarchedon, by Castor— Lady Peer, 3yrs, 8.7 (A.
