NATIONAL DAIRY ASSOCIATION OF NEW ZEALAND.
An important meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Dairy Association (South Island), held on Friday, was attended by Messrs James Milne (Wyndham, in the cbair), J. Gray (Mataura), Walter Riddell (Taieri and Peninsula Company), J. Barnett (Central Ohristchurch), J. Stevenson (Henley), John Spratt (Dunedin), and J. R. Scott (secretary). The Chairman explained that the meeting was called so that the Department of Agriculture might know the views held by the association on the -subject of branding and grading dairy produce, as a section, of exporters in Wellington seemed desirous of a system inimical to what the association considered in the best interests of the dairy produce trade, and contrary to those proposed by the Department of Agriculture, and supported all along by the association. It was also further advisable to advise the North Island Dairy Asoociatipn, who held their meeting at Stratford on tho sth August, as to the opinion of this association on these subjects. The following resolutions were passed unanimously, the secretary being instructed to forward same to the Secretary of Agriculture, the Dairy Commissioner, and the Secretary of the National Dairy Association (Limited), Wellington:— "(l) That this meeting unanimously and most strongly urge the Government to maintain the principle of one factory one braud for each dairy factory in the colony, and on no account allow exporters to have brands of their own to be put on in place of the individual factory impress brands. (2) That they do not consider it sufficient that the boxes or cases be branded with the registered number of the factory and tho words ' New Zealand Produce Only,' but that each box or case bear an impress brand, such being the name or adopted brand of the factory. (3) That, provided the boxes or cases are branded with the factory name or brand, they do not object to exporters putting on a shipping brand of their own on «iuch boxes, but never in such a way as to obliterate or make indistinct the factories' name or brand."
It was also resolved — " (1) That, while we concede to exporters a right to express their opinion upon our dairy produce trade, we consider that the right of controlling the policy and management remains with the producers, and that the Government should legislate in their interests alone. (2) That this meeting desire to express their entire satisfaction with the grading and branding of produce as first, second, and tHrd grade, but recommend that the third grade should not ha exported at all. (3) That we respectfully suggest to the Government to endeavour to get one of the New Zealand lines of steamers to go Home monthly via the Cape, discharging produce into a cold storage steamer there, such steamer to run to South African coastal ports, granting them a subbidy for so doing."
