CLEARING SALE AT OWAKA.
Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report as follows:— We held a clearing sale at Owako, on Friday last on account of Mr William Ford, a. very old settler there, who has leased his farm. Considering-the locality, the attendance of buyers was a lirge one, and bidding for both horses and 'sheep proved spirited. Mr Ford was well known in .the district as the owner of good horses for farm work, and the stock brought good rates, as the following indication of some of the sales will show: — Bay mare, nine years, £51 10s ; bay mare, aged, £2S ; bay mare, eight years, £46 10s ; filly, three years (small), £23;. bay mare (light), £22; coit, unbroken, £16. The dairy cows offered sold at from £3 10s to £5, and implements all brought full rates.
SALE OF HORSES. Messrs Matheson, Pram, and Co. report: — .We held one of our periodical sales of horses at Balclutha on Saturday. There was a good entry and a fair attendance of- those interested, and out of about 20 offered a dozen changed hands at satisfactory prices. The sale was very successful, and we intend holding regular monthly sales for the future. The Clutha distric.t is one ofthe best for sales of sheep and cattle, farmers and others always bidding 1 well, and putting some life into the business. We, therefore, see rib reason why horses should not be treated in the same manner, and^vve have, no doubt, given reasonable opportunities, that they will be. We sold on behalf of 10 different vendors at the following rates:— Best draught geldings, £30 to £45; best draught mares, £29 to £41 10s , spring-carters, £19 to £29 ss; best hacks, £20. to £30 ; other horses, £5 5s to £18 ; also a quantity of harness at full rates.
