DUNEDIN HORSE SALEYARDS
'Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report as follows: — There was a fairly large entry of horses at our sale last Saturday, the bulk of the entry . being medium draught mares and geldings and spring-carters.. The attendance of buyers was not quite up to the usual, but in spite of this the competition at some periods of the sale was spirited. The consignment from Mr F. J. Sullivan met a keen 'demand, and sold at satisfactory prices. We sold m all 40 head at quotations. Draughts : With the exception of one or two really useful horses,, the entry was of second-class quality, and, taking this into consideration, the prices *real- • ised were fully .up to late rates'. We find' in •• most cases that vendors' are putting too .high - reserves on their horses, and' they seem to expect medium draughts to fetch the same prices as first-class young horses; consequently they are at times disappointed. Spring-carters: J.nere was a fair show in .this class, -and prices were. well. mai.ntai'ne~d,", throughout" the -sale/ Light -harness horses and ,hacks: Some fair *" 1 .lJ? ll £S:,' were offere d, but prices asked were too stiff m" most cases; and a good number had to:b'e passed iri. . We quote: Superior young draught mares and^ geldings, £50 to '£6o ; extra good prize horses, _-=SGO to £70 ; medium -draught mares and" geldings, £35 to "£42 ; aged do; £25 to -'£32; upstanding carriage horses,' £25' to £&Q ; - well-matched carriage pairs, ' £60 to £80 ; strong spring- van Horses, - £30 fo £35; milkcart' and butchers' order-cart horses, £16 to £20; tram horses, £14 to £18; light hacks, £10 to £12; extra good hacks, £18 to £25; weedy and aged hacks and harness horses, £2 to &o.
