PORTO BELLO

August 30. — In spite of vile weather, the Literary and Musical Society mustered in good foice on Wednesday evening, when the president (Mr Barton) presided. The syllabus item, was an essay by Mr M'Bean, of Broad Bay, on " How to Make the Best of Life."' The essayist showed the various qualities required to make life enjoyable, useful, and happy, and, by sound reasoning and illustrations fiom modern history, proveel to his auditors that life well lived is worth living. A musical programme, both instrumental and vocal, made up a most enjoyable evening's entertainment Tho "next meeting will be ladies' night, and open to visitors.
