Messrs Thomas Pivterson and Co., Manse street, report February 21: — Fruit.—Apples: Cocking, Id to lid; eating, 2d to 2^d per lb. Oranges: Italian—halves, 10s; wholes, 17s 6d. Lemons: Messina, 22s 6d to 255. Teviot fruit now forward. Peaches, 3d to 4d. Apricots, 4d to 4Jd. Plums, ljd to 3d per lb. Rhubarb : Plentiful, good, 4s. Green peas, 6s to 9s per cwt. Gooseberries, Id. Tomatoes: Hothouse, 4d to 41d; Nelson, 3Ad to 4d per lb. Grapes, 8d to Is. Raspberries, sd. Produce.—Fresh butter, 6d to 7d; salt, 6d to 7Ad. Bacon: Roll, 6d lo 6*d. Hams, 7Jd to Bd. Pigs, 3d. Cheese: Factory, 4|d to sd; farmers', 4d to 4Ad. Onions, £4 to £4 10s. Potatoes: Peninsula, £2 10s; Oamaru, £2 to £2 5s Poultry.—Hens, 3s; loosters, 3s 6d; ducks, 3s to 43. Turkeys: Hens, Gd to 7d per lb; cocks, 9d. We receive all descriptions of farm produce for sale on commission.
At Hanmer Springs, on Tuesday week last, the temperature was 147deg in the sun. All vegetation looked as if under a withering fire. Rag weed is now in full bloom in several parts of the Riverton distiict. Where there are only small patches of it, owners should have it taken out to prevent it spreading. Arthur George Hinge was committed for trial at Balclutha on Wednesday on a charge of the theft of a gold brooch and 35s in cash from Mrs Mitchell, who was staying at the Crown Hotel. Houlahan was discharged. Somo 120 names of intending members of the Mataura Mounted Rifles have been received. A selection will be made to reduce these to 80 — the strength allowed by the Defence department. A largely-attended meeting was held at Lovell's Flat (says the correspondent of the Free PreFe) re the forming of a rifle club, when 30 names were handed in. A committee was ! appointed to approach the Defence depart- J jnent in the matter.
