THE FEDERAL CONVENTION. Melbourne. March 17.
The Federal Convention has adopted the: bill. The final sitting takes place to-day. Mr Barton, in a lengthy- speech, reviewed tha bill. Sir George Turner, who was absent; telegraphed eaying that he would carefully consider the bill to see if he could with justice recommended it to the people, but he did not altogether like the measure. Sir E. Braddon (Tasmania) and Sir Richard Baker (South Australia) announced that they would recommend it to their respective colon i«8. March 18. The general opinion of delegates was favourable to recommending the Federal Bill to the people. Sir J. Forrest declined to express an opinion until he had consulted members of his Cabinet. Mr Kingston gaid it was the most magnificent constitution into which the representatives of an enlightened people ever breathed the breath of life and hope. Mr Isaacs required time for consideration, but Mr Dsakin recommended the measure outright. The Federal Convention has closed. Adelaide, March 18. Mr Holder thinks that federation will -be an accomplished fact by January next — that is as far as petitioning the English Parliament to ratify the bill is concerned.
